Earlier today, we updated you on an upcoming ban in New York City that will eliminate the sale of large sodas in movie theaters, street carts, and restaurants.
The ban will include drinks in excess of 16 fluid ounces, forcing customers who happen to enjoy a large soda to figure out complex math and purchase two.
Perhaps Mayor Bloomberg was hoping the city’s residents were too stupid to do the math.
Steve Martin however, was onto his game…
“We’re not taking away anybody’s right to do things, we’re simply forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup.”
The statement, “forcing you to understand” is a step above and beyond a nanny state, it’s downright dictatorial.
Here’s the video:
Conservatives on Twitter are now engaged in a debate over what Mayor Bloomberg’s next ban might be. Will it involve his war on obesity, or something else? Here is my contribution:
That wasn’t a made up headline. Many of us, who actually believed we still live in an America where we are free to decide what we eat and drink, may have mistaken that for satire, or a tabloid type of headline.
But ‘lo, it is not.
Mayor Bloomberg, in his personal attempt to fight obesity, appears to have an excess of fat between his ears preventing him from thinking very clearly on the subject.
In what the New York Times calls the administration’s most ambitious effort to curb obesity, New York City is about to enact “a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts.”
The ban effects the sale of any sweetened drink in excess of 16 fluid ounces, or roughly the size of a medium coffee. It could take effect in less than a year.
This plan is the first of its kind anywhere in the nation, perhaps because others couldn’t concoct a more inane way to fight obesity. But Bloomerg has an extraordinary knack for finding the most absurd ways to monitor your health, and by extension – take away your freedoms.
This is the nanny state at it’s finest. Perhaps it is another reason why New York’s residents are fleeing the state in record numbers.
Bloomberg actually has the audacity to claim he’s doing it in the public’s interest.
“I think that’s what the public wants the mayor to do,” he said.
Can we get a poll on that? What New Yorker, or American for that matter, wants government telling them what they can or can not drink?
What say you readers, are you too stupid to decide on your own what you can put into your bodies, or do you need a government sponsored diet plan forced upon you?
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Friday, June 1, in honor of New York State Trooper Amanda Anna, who died on May 26.
Governor Cuomo said, “On behalf of all New Yorkers, I mourn the loss of Trooper Amanda Anna. Trooper Anna risked her life every day to protect New Yorkers and died while serving the people of our state. We will honor her service and remember her devotion to New York. I send my deepest sympathies to her family, friends, and colleagues at the State Police.”
Trooper Anna died as a result of injuries sustained from a car accident while on duty in Oswego County. Her funeral will take place on Friday.
A report from WSYR:
Along the quiet shores in the lakefront village of Fair Haven is a tight knit community, burdened by sadness and grief after the loss of State Trooper Amanda Anna.
Amanda’s mother Florence Wallace told NewsChannel 9, “If she had any place in the world she wanted to be, it was Fair Haven. She just took great pride in being a part of this community.”
Frank and Florence Wallace describe their daughter as a hometown girl with the spirit of an angel that touched the heart of anyone who crossed her path.
“She was joyous, she knew the Lord, she loved the Lord and she loved everyone she ever met,” Florence said.
A love that would bring people from all over the state to honor her memory, just days after she was killed. The six year veteran was assigned to the Hastings Barracks in Oswego County – an area that will likely never be the same.
“We realize she had a big impact on the community where she worked and truly our eyes have been open. She touched bases we weren’t even aware of,” said Amanda’s dad, Frank.
And even in her tragic death, she’s still giving life to others by donating her organs to people across the nation.
Another New York hero indeed…
Allen West recently held a townhall meeting at the Mae Volen senior center in Boca Raton. Despite the seemingly peaceful setting, a few overzealous protesters repeatedly attacked the Florida congressman during the audience question period. And the liberals, as they often do, crossed the line (video below).
Things seemed to be relatively under control. Some of the protesters were escorted out of the meeting before its completion due to their behavior, while others stuck around to harass the Congressman afterward.
One woman started arguing her point for gay marriage – perfectly fine in and of itself – but her delivery was a might bit crass, prompting security to step in. Rather than accepting the point that the crowd was approaching uncalled-for obnoxious levels, the progressives began referring to the security team as stormtroopers and accusing them of “Gestapo-like” behavior.
At some point, West is surrounded by what he calls his “liberal groupies”, but vows that “I’m going to stand right here.” That’s when they begin to press on even further.
As Doug Ross reports, some of the World War II vets in attendance try to stand up for West as the protesters continue pressing and trying to hurl insults his way.
Instead of honoring their service, the liberals go after these heroes, to the point of putting hands on one while dropping the f-bomb on him.
Because that’s the way liberals roll, don’t ya know?
This image (courtesy of Ross) shows a bit of the scuffle…
At a meeting with 20 conservative Jewish leaders yesterday, President Obama laid claim to having more knowledge of Judaism than other previous President. What does the President cite for his breadth of knowledge?
He read about it.
By this logic, I once read the book What to Expect When You’re Expecting, thus apparently making me a zen master of all things childbirth.
The Weekly Standard reports:
“Obama … stressed he probably knows about Judaism more than any other president, because he read about it,” Haaretz reports. “[He] wondered how come no one asks Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner or Senate minority leader Mitch McConnel [sic] about their support to Israel.”
Similarly, he said to the group, “I [am] not going to tell you again how I even feel about Israel, but why [are] we still talking about it?”
He then suggested that he should not be questioned about his commitment to the Jewish state because “all his friends in Chicago were Jewish – and at the beginning of his political career he was accused of being a puppet of the Israel lobby,” Haaretz reports.
Do not question his commitment because his friends in Chicago were Jewish? He was also friends with Bill Ayers, should we not question his commitment to domestic terrorism. His pastor for decades was Jeremiah Wright, should we not question his commitment to anti-American racists?
And how do we know he read about Judaism anyway, did he take a college course on the topic? We’ll likely never know.
It’s a shame he didn’t read up more on basic economics or capitalism. Perhaps then he’d be an expert on those topics as well.
More proof that higher taxes actually leads to lower revenue here in the Empire State.
The Tax Foundation has developed an interactive tool known as the “migration calculator“, which uses data from the Internal Revenue Service to chart the number of individuals moving between states each year. It also calculates the effect these migrations have on tax revenue.
New York it seems, has hemorrhaged residents at an alarming rate, and despite it’s exorbitant tax rates to generate revenue, has actually lost $45.6 billion in income because of the migration.
According to CNSNews, New York accounted for the largest number of residents lost between 2000 and 2010, with 3.4 million leaving the state for greener pastures. During that same period, 2.1 million people came to New York, resulting in a net loss of 1.3 million residents.
The result? Nearly $50 billion in lost income.
The article reports that a majority of New Yorkers set out for Florida, taking advantage of the fact that the Sunshine State does not impose an individual income tax, an estate tax, or an inheritance tax.
Here is a summary of what New Yorkers endure tax wise:
New York State has a progressive personal income tax rate ranging from 6.45 percent to 8.82 percent for those earning over $2 million. Sales varies by county, and is between seven and eight percent. In Manhattan, the sales tax is 8.875 percent.
According to the Retirement Living Center, which examines tax burdens by state for those nearing retirement, New York also levies a gasoline tax at 49.0 cents per gallon and a cigarette tax of $4.35 per pack, along with an additional $1.50 per pack in New York City.
New York is also one of 17 states plus the District of Columbia that collects an estate tax, with a $1 million exemption and a progressive rate from 0.8 percent to 16 percent.
And yet progressives in New York continue to call for higher taxes, particularly on the rich, meaning fewer people will remain and wealthy entrepreneurs will take their businesses with them.
While trying to honor the famous Polish war hero, Jan Karski, with a Presidential Medal of Freedom, President Obama may have ended up creating a scandal. During the ceremony, the president’s poor choice of words ignited a firestorm of controversy in the nation of Poland.
In reference to a Nazi death camp yesterday, Obama failed to define the Warsaw location as German-operated in occupied Poland, and instead referred to it simply as “a Polish death camp.”
The gaffe leaves the impression that it was Poland who had created and operated the death camp.
While the comment drew little attention here in the States, it made headlines all across Poland, eventually prompting the Polish Foreign Minister to blast Obama, saying that his “ignorance and incompetence” had upstaged an important ceremony.
A report in The Economist explains why Poland takes exception to the reference:
Few things annoy Poles more than being blamed for the crimes committed by the Nazi occupiers of their homeland. For many years, Polish media, diplomats and politicians have tried to persuade outsiders to stop using the phrase “Polish death camps” as a shorthand description of Auschwitz and other exemplars of Nazi brutality and mass murder.
Unfortunately this seems to have escaped Barack Obama’s staff.
Many things escape the Obama administration, but this one seems to have upset an ally to the United States.
Obama must issue an apology to quell the incident that a majority of the Polish media is calling ‘scandalous’.
If President Obama was under the impression that his gay marriage flip-flop-flap was a game changer, readers of the Mental Recession would beg to differ. Our recent poll seems to indicate that people simply don’t care about this social issue, and rank it well below other major problems facing our country today.
Is gay marriage an important issue in the 2012 election?
- Extremely Important – 30%
- Don’t care – 67%
- Undecided – 2%
Carney is normally a wordsmith, in that he can say words in a certain order that give off the appearance of actually providing a thought.
In other words – he lies well.
But words failed Mr. Carney yesterday when he tried to explain to a reporter the main difference between Obama’s investment of taxpayer money in Solyndra, and Romney’s past investment of private money in Bain Capital.
Last thing. If that’s the argument, how is that different from Romney’s argument on Bain Capital, which is that many succeeded and a few failed?
And here is a screen capture that pretty much summarizes the ensuing explanation…
Look, there, there, there is the… the difference in that… your overall view of what your responsibilities are as president, and what your view of the economic future is. And, and the president believes, as he’s made clear, that a president’s responsibility is not just to, uh… those who win, but those who, for an example, in a company where there have been layoffs or a company that has gone bankrupt, that, you know, we have to make sure that those folks have the means to find other employment, that they have the ability to train for other kinds of work, and that’s part of the overall responsibility the president has.
Ohhhh… Now we get it.
Thanks for the clarification…
Still questioning whether or not you can vote for Mitt Romney? If, after watching this video from Ben Howe, you’re still unsure, then you really need to question yourself.
Howe uses an epic speech that the late but great Andrew Breitbart delivered at CPAC this year, calling on people to choose between two paths – Obama or a candidate they might not find to be 100% perfect.
Breitbart had this to say:
I don’t care who our candidate is and I haven’t since the beginning of this. I haven’t! Ask not what the candidate can do for you, ask what you can do for the candidate!
When I walk through CPAC or a I travel the United States to meet people in the Tea Party who care – black, white, gay, and straight – anyone that’s willing to stand next to me to fight the progressive left, I will be in that bunker.
And if you’re not in that bunker because you’re not satisfied with [a certain] candidate, more than shame on you! You’re on the other side!
This video is many things.
It is a summation of the failed Obama experiment.
It is the greatness of Andrew Breitbart and Ben Howe.
And it is a declaration of #war.
What bunker will you be in?
