Defense Bill Amendment Grants Full Legal Rights … To Terrorists

May 16, 2012 at 4:07 pm (Adam Smith, Court, David Rivkin, Defense Bill Amendment, Justin Amash, Legal System, Michigan, Terrorists, War on Terror, Washington)

This is the stuff of parallel universes…

Washington Free Beacon:

Former government attorneys and defense experts fear that foreign terrorists could capitalize on a new House proposal that would afford them full protection under the U.S. legal system, potentially spurring a domestic influx of would-be terrorists who may seek to exploit the legal loophole.

The amendment, spearheaded by Reps. Justin Amash (R., Mich.) and Adam Smith (D., Wash), would implement an unprecedented reversal in longstanding U.S. policy by requiring that terrorists be prosecuted in civilian courts—a shift that would also allow them to be housed among general inmates in American prisons.

The amendment would prevent the president from effectively fighting the war on terror, thereby posing a serious threat to the country’s national security, experts warn.

“In order to be able to successfully fight and win this war, we need to support the notion that this is a real war,” said David Rivkin, who provided legal counsel in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. “Anything that delegitimizes the laws of war is a horrible thing symbolically in terms of undermining a fragile consensus.”

Smith and Amash, Rivkin said, are unraveling a delicate legal balance that permits the president to effectively “fight and win” the war on terror.

Winning the war on terror is clearly not a priority any longer.  Keeping things PC with our enemies is job number one.

Our representatives in government are severely undermining their own country, and the men and women who fight on Obama’s behalf.

Manny Pacquiao Banned From LA Mall Because It’s "Not a Place For Intolerance"

May 16, 2012 at 3:40 pm (Boxer, Boxing, Catholic, Gay Marriage, Intolerance, Los Angeles, Mall, Manny Pacquiao, Philippines, Rick Caruso, Same Sex Marriage, Tolerance)

Seriously, are there any leftists out there that readily understand irony?

Boxing champ Manny Pacquiao recently voiced his support for marriage as an institution between one man and one woman.  In an interview with the Conservative Examiner, Pacquiao had the following to say:

“God’s words first … obey God’s law first before considering the laws of man.”

“God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other.”

Not surprising, considering over 80% of the population identifies as Catholic in Pacquiao’s home country, the Philippines.

So how did the owner of a popular LA mall respond to those remarks?  By banning the boxing legend – for intolerance.

Via Big Government:  (h/t Weasel Zippers):

The “tolerant” same-sex marriage left has struck again – this time, at the popular hangout The Grove, in Los Angeles. The owner of The Grove, Rick Caruso, tweeted that iconic boxing great and Philippines Congressman Manny Pacquiao would not be allowed “on the premises” thanks to Pacquiao’s outspoken opposition to same-sex marriage. “Boxer Manny Pacquiao is not welcome @TheGroveLA,” he tweeted. “@TheGroveLA is a gathering place for all Angelenos, not a place for intolerance.” Pacquiao was supposed to do an interview today with “Extra” at The Grove.

That now earns him a ban from a public area in Los Angeles.

So Caruso’s response to alleged intolerance is to promote blatant intolerance?

Now picture this had Pacquiao been a supporter of same sex marriage, who was subsequently banned by a conservative business owner.  Perez Hilton, Dan Savage, and the like would be protesting and demanding the mall be shuttered, and the media would be hammering the owner for intolerance, labeling him a right-wing bigot.

Liberals want people to believe they support free speech and welcome all groups into their tent equally.  But that only applies if you agree with their agenda whole-heartedly.

Intolerance, thy name is liberal.

Catholic University Drops Healthcare Coverage For Students Because of Obamacare

May 16, 2012 at 11:35 am (Contraception, Cost, Franciscan University, Healthcare, Obamacare, Ohio)

But, but, if you like your insurance you can keep it!  Wait, no?

Via Fox News:

A Catholic university in Ohio said Tuesday it is being forced to end a student health insurance program over the Obama administration’s contraception mandate and costs associated with other provisions of the health care overhaul.

Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, said it has so far excluded contraceptive services and products from its health insurance policy for students and will not participate in a plan that “requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life.”

In its decision to drop coverage, the school cited the contraception mandate, but also a requirement that the maximum coverage amount be increased to $100,000 for policyholders — claiming that would have made premiums skyrocket. A university official told Fox News Radio the students’ basic $600 policy was going to double in cost in the fall and triple next year and that the school’s insurance provider said the increases were the result of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Say, isn’t the word ‘affordable’ in the name of the bill?  We had to pass it to find out what was in it, and it turns out the title wasn’t even accurate?

Todd Starnes has the following quotes from a university representative:

“This is putting people in a position where they are having to choose between their faith and their morality — and now an unjust cost,” said Mike Hernon, vice president of advancement.

“These sorts of regulations from the government are forcing our hand in a way that’s really wrong.” Hernon said students must have insurance – either through their parent’s policy or through the university’s basic plan. The plan currently costs approximately $600 per year. However, Hernon said their health care provider informed them that under Obamacare, the policy would double in price to $1,200 and the following year it would triple.

“We couldn’t believe the price (increase),” he told Fox News. “We had them go back and reconfirm it. They said it was dictated by coverage limits that were released by the Obama administration.”

“At the end of the day, it’s the students who are hurt by this,” he said.

Now the argument becomes literal – repeal Obamacare, do it for the children.
