Bloomberg: Soda Ban is Trying to ‘Change the Public’s Taste’

September 13, 2012 at 4:20 pm (Donut Day, Mayor Bloomberg, Nanny Bloomberg, New York, Science, Soda, Soda Ban, Sugary Drinks)

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg once again reiterated his desire to force what he views as healthy choices on the citizens of the city.  Back in May, the mayor explained that his proposed ban on large sodas was a way of “forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup.”

Now it seems he’s not only trying to force you to understand, he’s trying to force a change in your tastes.

Earlier this afternoon, the New York City Board of Health officially approved its plan to ban larger soda cup sizes at restaurants and concession stands, and, barring a successful lawsuit and a court order, the initiative will take effect in six months. And although a majority of the city’s residents disapprove of the move, at a press conference, Mayor Bloomberg aggressively told reporters time and time again that it won’t be as controversial as it seems.

“I think it’s fair to say there’s no evidence that it will hurt their business,” he said about restaurants arguing the requirement will hurt their bottom line. “Maybe outside of the limelight of newspaper or television camera, they would probably agree that down the road, what’s likely to happen here, what’s very likely to happen, is eventually they will just transition pretty much everything and change the public’s taste. Why? We cannot continue to have our kids come down with diabetes at age 6. If it was one of your children I think you’d be out there with a very different kind of question.”

This statement is the very definition of what makes a nanny politician.  Bloomberg believes that government knows what is best for the people to eat and drink, and he’d like to find government answers in forcing them to consume products he deems healthy.  He believes parents are too uneducated to make the right choices for their children.

That, in a word, is frightening.

The question is – where does it stop?  Doughnuts contain hydrogenated oils, and are essentially one of the worst cancer foods you can possibly eat.  Yet there the Mayor stood a day after the soda ban was announced, proudly celebrating the virtues of National Donut Day.

This is the height of hypocrisy.

Why is Mayor Bloomberg not actively working to mandate a one-donut policy at all bakeries in the city?  He could just as effectively site the obesity statistics used in his previous response on sugary drinks.

During the press conference today, Bloomberg ridiculed the intellect of a reporter for not understanding the mayor’s wise decisions and the science behind them.

At times, Mr. Bloomberg got a bit testy. For example, one reporter asked how he knows soda, which has been part of Americans’ diet for some time, is responsible for the surge in obesity.

“Miss, I don’t know how to answer your question if you don’t have any understanding of science whatsoever,” the mayor answered. “It’s just thermodynamics, if you put in more calories in than you burn up, you’re going to store it. Storage of calories is called fat and we’d be happy to provide some information for you.”

You know who does understand science?  The two separate sets of researchers who recently determined there is no link between childhood obesity and soda.

We’d be happy to provide some information for you, Mr. Mayor.

Stunning Allegations: Marines in Cairo Not Allowed to Use Live Ammunition?

September 13, 2012 at 11:11 am (Ammo, Anne Patterson, Cairo, Egypt, Embassy, Live Ammunition, Marines, Mitt Romney, Muslim Brotherhood, President Obama)

This absolutely can not be true.  If even a sliver of it is however, multiple people need to be fired effective immediately.

Via the Washington Free Beacon:

U.S. Marines defending the American embassy in Egypt were not permitted by the State Department to carry live ammunition, limiting their ability to respond to attacks like those this week on the U.S. consulate in Cairo.

Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson “did not permit US Marine guards to carry live ammunition,” according to multiple reports on U.S. Marine Corps blog spotted by Nightwatch. “She neutralized any US military capability that was dedicated to preserve her life and protect the US Embassy.”

If true, the reports indicate that Patterson shirked her obligation to protect U.S. interests, Nightwatch states.

“She did not defend US sovereign territory and betrayed her oath of office,” the report states. “She neutered the Marines posted to defend the embassy, trusting the Egyptians over the Marines.”

That is beyond abhorrent if true.

While the media continues to focus on Mitt Romney’s statements regarding the disgraceful respon to the attacks by the Obama administration, keep this in mind – the President may be putting the security and safety of U.S. citizens in the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood-backed Egyptian security teams over the United States Marines.

Hippie Fail: Protesters Try to Stop Keystone Pipeline Construction … By Chaining Themselves to Equipment That Isn’t Being Used

September 13, 2012 at 10:20 am (Energy, Environment, Hippies, Jobs, Keystone Pipeline, Protest)

A group known as the Tar Sands Blockade has come up with a brilliant idea that is sure to rock the environmental and energy debate – chaining themselves to equipment in an attempt to halt work on the job-creating Keystone Pipeline.

It may go done as one of the saddest protest efforts in history.

Here is a sampling of their self-congratulatory announcement:

“Today’s action has halted work on a segment of TransCanada’s illegitimate pipeline outside of Saltillo, TX. As promised, Tar Sands Blockade’s rolling campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience pushes forward. Five blockaders total are currently risking arrest to stop work on this segment of the Keystone XL pipeline. Contractors discovered their presence early in the work day, and work at the site was called off shortly thereafter.”

Uh oh…

One protester in a local news story (video below) explains why it’s so important for this group to stop construction of the pipeline.

“It’s necessary to stop this pipeline. It’s a threat to our constitutional rights.” – noted constitutional scholar and Tar Sands protestor.

The pipeline you say, infringes upon your Constitutional rights?  Well no actually, no it doesn’t.

But the genius doesn’t end there … the group of protesters chained themselves to equipment that wasn’t even being used.

Money quote from the news story:

“TransCanada says the protesters chained themselves to a third-party contractor’s equipment that was not going to be used today.”

The group is so committed to the cause that they’ve decided to work all the way up until lunch time.

“It’s after lunch now, so we’re gonna follow the lead of our contractor and police friends and call it a day!

Dedication baby!

Of course, pay no mind to the concessions TransCanada has already made in supporting a new pipeline route in Nebraska, one that would shield sensitive areas from construction.

“Today TransCanada announced the selection of a revised route for the Keystone XL Pipeline which bypasses the sensitive Sandhills region of Nebraska. The new route will result in the project crossing fewer miles of threatened and endangered species habitat, and fewer streams, rivers, and wetlands while completely avoiding sensitive Wellhead Protection Areas where the state’s groundwater resources are particularly shallow. These changes will further increase the resiliency of the Keystone XL pipeline which the U.S. State Department already declared ‘would have a degree of safety greater than any typically constructed domestic oil pipeline system.’”

But hey, never let facts yet in the way of a good misguided protest.

Hippies are so awesome…

Pro-Illegal Alien Poll Watching? There’s an App For That

September 13, 2012 at 7:03 am (2012 Elections, Common Cause, Elections, George Soros, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, New York, Open Society Institute, Poll Watching, PollWatchUSA, Sonia Sotomayor)

There is a new poll watching app being rolled out for smartphones in a few local primary races in New York today.  The app, named PollWatchUSA, will allow users to report problems at the ballot box.

A new app that lets voters flag polling-place irregularities will be tested at the primaries on Thursday and, if it works well, will be rolled out citywide for the November general election.

The program, PollWatchUSA, enables voters to report in real time if they are experiencing undue delays, having trouble getting or casting a ballot, or being subjected to harassment or intimidation.

Here is how the reporting will work:

In addition to allowing people to report impediments to voting quickly and easily, the application maps election trouble spots and allows observers, from the news media or from good-government groups like Common Cause, to alert the Board of Elections and to dispatch their own monitors to affected polling places.

It isn’t the app itself which should raise some eyebrows, but rather the group that is testing out PollWatchUSA today – an extreme, racially biased, pro-illegal alien group known as LatinoJustice PRLDEF.

The monitoring and advocacy group LatinoJustice PRLDEF will have a dozen or so volunteers posted at polling sites Thursday in Washington Heights and the Bronx equipped with the app.

“Our hope is to be able to use the crowdsourcing feature for poll monitoring so that we can assess any language, intimidation or other issues as they arise and address those problems by dispatching volunteers to those stations,” the group said in a statement. “We will use the data to better prepare polling stations for the general election in November.”

LatinoJustice currently has ‘expanded right(s) for illegal aliens’ as a central goal, and have long demanded “a path for legalization and citizenship for the millions of undocumented living in the United States.”

Why would a group whose main focus is the rights of illegal aliens need to stalk election locations?  And is this borderline intimidation for the to monitor the elections, and have the ability to call in the media when they find something objectionable to their pro-illegal agenda?

A recent article by Kevin Mooney over at Breitbart mentions LatinoJustice as a group trying “to keep non-citizens who tend to favor Democrats registered as voters.”  And now they’ll be able to make sure they vote as well.

That’s a concern.

The LatinoJustice group is so controversial that they came up as a possible deterrent in the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

From Accuracy in Media:

Sotomayor was a member of the National Council of La Raza from 1998 to 2004, and also gave speeches at La Raza-sponsored events. La Raza, whose name translates to “the Race” in Spanish, lobbies for radical policies like open border laws and access to drivers’ licenses for illegal immigrants.

The Supreme Court nominee also spent over a decade serving on the board of the left-wing LatinoJustice Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund (PRLDF) from 1980 until 1992. The PRLDF “pushes for enforced multiculturalism, diversity, bilingual public education, race-based gerrymandering of electoral districts, race-based employment quotas, tenants’ rights, and illegal immigrants’ rights,” argued Matthew Vadum of the American Spectator on May 26th.

And if that isn’t enough to raise eyebrows, LatinoJustice also receives funding from the George Soros group, the Open Society Institute.

Intimidation by pro-illegal alien groups at the polls?  Now there’s an app for that.
