Mitt Romney delivered a great series of jokes at the Al Smith dinner this evening in New York City.
Both Romney and President Obama attend the 67th annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a charity gala organized by the Archdiocese of New York. The speeches traditionally feature political humor, as both candidates are invited during an election year.
They’re right, Mitt absolutely tore it up last night, and if any independent voters had a chance to see this speech, it would have added an even further layer onto the man that Democrats have been trying to portray as an evil corporate raider.
“… people seem to be very curious just as to how we prepare for the debates. Let me tell you what I do. First, refrain from alcohol for 65 years before the debate.
Second, find the biggest available straw man and then just mercilessly attack it…
Big Bird didn’t even see it coming.
And by the way in — in the spirit of Sesame Street, the president’s remarks tonight are brought to you by the letter ‘O’ and the number $16 trillion.”
Watch the speech, I guarantee you will laugh your a** off…
The debate was entertaining enough for the Mitt Romney beat down, but what happens when you turn the volume down and really bad lip readers interpret what is being said? Glad you asked…

Olympic celebrations took a turn for the worse this afternoon in London when mayor Boris Johnson attempted to gin up excitement by careening down a zip wire whilst waving a pair of Union flags.
Problem being, he never made it to the end of the line, instead dangling above the ground a good 20 meters shy of his destination.
Mr Johnson was featuring as a “special guest” in Victoria Park, London, to ride the zip line, donning a hard hat and two Union flags as he attempted to sail down.
Instead, he ground steadily to a halt on the wire about 20m from the end as the wire sagged, and was left dangling inelegantly in front of a watching crowd.
The Mayor spent around five minutes hanging from the drooping line as spectators took video footage and photographs of his misfortune.
When one asked how he was feeling, he replied “very, very well thank you”, before shouting: “Get me a rope, get me a ladder” to bystanders.
Best part of this video (seen below) is the woman asking “Is it a bird? Is it a plane?…”
Mayor Bloomberg was seen shaking his head and saying, “Man, did that guy look ridiculous or what?”
Orville is a cat. Orville was named after the aviation pioneer, Orville Wright. Orville’s owner, clearly obsessed with aviation, decided that his dying cat’s last wish would be to fly. Wish granted.
Orville the Cat, was turned into a helicopter.
From Sky News:
An artist has turned his cat into a flying helicopter after it was killed by a car.Dutchman Bart Jansen stuffed Orville before teaming up with a radio control helicopter expert to attach propellers to each of its four paws. The cat – named after pioneering aviator Orville Wright – is now a piece of artwork. The “Orvillecopter” is on show at the Kunstrai art festival in Amsterdam.Jansen said his creation is “half cat, half machine”, and part of a visual art project to pay tribute to his pet.
And here’s the disturbing video…
Now Mr. Jansen, I’m quite sure your cat shared your love of aviation, because what cat doesn’t dream about flight, in between 23 hours of sleeping on the newspaper?
But I’m also fairly sure that upon his passing, his last request wasn’t to be transformed into Kitty Hawk Down.
Conservatives have been creating a little mischief over on Twitter the last couple of weeks, taking over liberal talking points and turning it to their own advantage – while injecting a splash of humor along the way.
Today Former White House Press Secretary Bill Burton attempted to start a hashtag game called #RomneyYachtNames. It’s so unfunny and forced, it’s exactly the kind of thing that would trend on Twitter. And it did, but not the way Bill Burton intended.Conservatives hijacked the hashtag and soon started their own called #ObamaYachtNames. Never mind the fact that that barely makes sense. The stereotypes about Obama aren’t that he’s rich and owns yachts. That’s Romney’s thing. Obama is the elitist black liberation theology professor who eats kale with a side of dog, remember?!
What Cordova is referring to is this report from Twitchy. You’ll see one of our tweets featured there for Romney Yacht Names.
We also offered a few efforts under the #ObamaYachtNames hashtag:
- Barely Treading Water
- Ayers and Sea
- Big Stick, Little Dinghy
- The Narcissist
But that’s not the only conservative hashtag game that’s caught in this week. Just in the past few days, the ones I’ve seen: #MorePopularThanObamaBudget, #ObamaInHistory, #ObamaFirsts, #LowerUnderObama, #ObamaBedtimeStories, #HomophonesforObama.
If you feel like punishing yourself, just scroll down @MichelleMalkin Twitter feed. Re-tweeting the unfunniest garbage tweets she can find is apparently a hobby of hers.
Everyone in power deserves to be ridiculed. If that wasn’t true, we’d be wasting our time with this blog (instead of just wasting your time with this blog). I don’t have a problem with these hashtag games politically. I have a problem with these hashtag games comedically.
He then runs down a list of examples in which he supposedly demonstrates conservative’s lack of comedic chops – and fails miserably. The Twitter exhibits being offered are hilarious, while Cordova’s response to them demonstrates a person who simply has the jokes flying way over his head.
There really wouldn’t be much of a problem if Cordova simply admitted that he isn’t intelligent enough to understand the jokes. And assuredly, the conservative Twittosphere would actually welcome a counter-argument that ‘we at Comedy Central are funnier’, followed up by a fantastically funny rant. But this comes off as a comedically unsophisticated man, singing the blues about not being able to join in any reindeer games.
Big Hollywood has fired back at Comedy Central:
Douglas Ernst adds:
Not too long ago conservatives sat silently in the face of a media complex that relentlessly mocked them. From music to movies, television to nightly news, conservatives were almost always on the butt-end of political jokes. The narratives that sprang up to slime the right were tough, if not nearly impossible, to stamp out. One could only watch with frustration as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, David Letterman or any number of late-night “funnymen” ripped our worldview and our heroes to shreds. Media could circle the wagons around their ideological allies and shield them from the slings and arrows of quick-witted conservatives.
Needless to say, those days are over. Recently, conservatives have come out with guns blazing, shooting down the early efforts of the Obama campaign and the mainstream media to create narratives and frame the debate. Comedy Central has taken notice, which means that many, many other liberals have as well.
Ernst is right… While some might view the conservative hashtag games as just that – games – they are something much more serious. They are forcing the media to alter or at least cover the narrative that conservatives are dictating through Twitter. An overstatement? Not quite. Over the last couple of months, the conservative Twitter battle has been highlighted in such liberal media stalwarts as the New York Times, ABC News, and now the uber-liberal Comedy Central.
While a sense of humor is sorely lacking from the Comedy Central piece, it is all too abundant on the right side of Twitter. What better way to mock somebody pouting over conservative hashtag games, than to start a new conservative hashtag game?
#FunnierThanCordova was trending by night’s end.
This weekend’s lesson – Don’t dress your children in an outfit that makes them look tasty to large carnivorous cats. If nothing, we provide valuable life lessons here at The Mental Recession.

From the Huffington Post:
At least that’s what the shortened headline on the Mediaite website reads, which I thought was pretty funny…
You put him on a slingshot ride in Orlando, Florida.
Before the ride starts, he actually says, ‘I’d rather be in Afghanistan’.
His reaction, the scream of sheer terror as he yells ‘That was not a countdown!’, is absolutely hilarious. (h/t All-American Blogger)

God bless both these guys. They’re awesome. Good to see them back home having a good time. Well, one of them, at least.
Bless them indeed… But watching the one guy being tortured is just too funny!
