Romney Defeats Santorum in Iowa Caucuses By 8 Votes

January 4, 2012 at 9:24 am (2012 Election, GOP, Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul)

It’s on!

This pretty much solidifies Mitt Romney’s chances at garnering the nomination.  But at least Santorum can make him work, and of Gingrich pulls it out in South Carolina, the vetting process could be extended.

Paul and Bachmann should drop out soon, so we can really focus on the legitimate contenders.

Honestly, I’ve wondered why Santorum hasn’t faired much better in the polls prior to this.  He is a strong conservative candidate, with experience, and Presidential speaking abilities.  Glad to see him pick up the pace with the voters.

From Fox News:

The Republican presidential candidates propelled out of the Iowa caucuses Wednesday with the race looking dramatically different than it did just one week ago.

Mitt Romney won the night, but only by one of the slimmest margins in Iowa election history.

Rick Santorum landed a second-place finish just eight votes behind Romney, turning a stunning performance out of his long-shot bid for the nomination and ending up toe-to-toe with the presumed frontrunner of the national campaign.

Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn reported the official vote count at 30,015 for Romney and 30,007 for Santorum. Each candidate pulled in about 25 percent.

The results allow each candidate to reasonably claim momentum going into the next race.

Perry is reported to be considering his options, but he only ended up about 3% behind Gingrich who is still considered viable. And the further he distances himself from that brain cramp about the three departments of government he couldn’t remember, the better he will do.

Should Perry drop out?
