Allen West: Americans Are Truly Conservative

This man will be President one day.  He was far and away the most powerful speaker at yesterday’s CPAC conference in Washington, DC.

Last month, West opened the door to a possible Vice-Presidential role, though he scarcely seems like a supporting role type of character.  He is a leader.  That said, should Romney or Gingrich win the nomination, they would be wise to give West serious consideration as their running mate.  It would give them credibility in areas such as foreign policy and national defense, as well as giving them added credibility with staunch conservatives – a group disenchanted with current establishment candidates.

Via CPAC:

Rep. Allen West, R-Florida, said conservatism is still alive during his address Friday to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). “If Americans take time to think about what they truly believe, they will find out they are conservatives,” West said.

West was just getting started.  He absolutely knocked it out of the park when he drove home the following points about a liberal reliance on government.

From The Hill:

West delivered a forceful rebuke of both Democrats and government programs to help the needy as he addressed activists at Washington, D.C.’s annual Conservative Political Action Conference.
“It is the liberal philosophy, not the conservative one, that views humans as selfish automatons,” West said.
“Liberals worry that what’s best for the individual might not be better for the public at large,” said the Florida congressman. “But that philosophy assumes something vicious about each and every one of us. It assumes we only care about ourselves.”

Then there was this takeaway line:

He told activists that when conservatives object to expanded entitlements and redistribution of wealth, they are accused of having no compassion.

“Of course we have compassion. We just don’t believe the safety net should be used as a hammock,” he said to boisterous applause.

A safety net – not a hammock.

Thank God for men like Allen West.
